Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center announces winter/spring 2023 offerings

Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center is offering a robust selection of virtual educational opportunities starting this month:

  • 2023 Older Adults and Opioids webinar series. Co-sponsored with the WNY Rural-AHEC, this monthly series will cover a variety of topics, including home management, postoperative opioid use and prescribing habits for older adults with cancer, and overdose prevention. Click here for dates, times and topics.
  • Virtual Dementia Education Series for Health Care Professionals webinar series, co-sponsored with New York State's Alzheimer's Association chapters. Topics include: dementia diagnosis and types of dementia, promoting brain health, and non-cognitive symptoms of dementia. All sessions include CME and SW credits. Causewave webinar focuses on strengthening the nonprofit sector's talent pipeline

On February 9 at 10-11 a.m., Causewave Community Partners will host "Solutions for Strengthening the Nonprofit Sector's Talent Pipeline." This webinar will feature research conducted last year to identify trends for attracting, developing, and retaining talent in the Western NY region, and a conversation with Rusty Stahl, Founder and CEO of Fund the People, a national effort to encourage and support funders and nonprofits to integrate talent investing into their grantmaking and fundraising practices.

SUNY Corning Community College offers workforce training resources

SUNY CCC’s Workforce Education & Academic Pathways (WEAP) Team offers a variety of professional development and training programs. Upcoming sessions include:

  • Peer Recovery Advocacy and Coaching Training - a 46-hour training program for those who have personal experience with addiction, whether having lived through it themselves or having helped a friend or family member. The next training session will be held on Thursdays on March 2 through May 11 at 4-7 p.m. via Zoom. 
  • Introduction to Grant Writing - a 3-part series to build skills around identifying and evaluating grant opportunities, planning for and developing a proposal, and strategies to increase competitiveness of proposals. The series will be held on Wednesdays, March 1, 8 and 15 at 5:30-8:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Monroe County Medical Society to host office manager training series

The Certified Medical Office Manager training teaches practical administrative skills that lead to improved communication with providers, third-party payers, patients, and business associates. This advanced training course provides instruction to guide students in learning leadership and problem-solving skills, understanding the full scope of medical office operations, and undertaking the path for advancement into supervisory roles.

The 4-class series will be held on March 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

St. John Fisher to host diversity in the workplace conference

St. John Fisher University will host an in-person Diversity in the Workplace conference on March 30 at 9-5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Rochester Downton. Participants will share best practices, engage in cross-industry discussions, and preview DEI and workforce related research in order to impact our community.

UR Medicine launches tuition-free nursing program

To combat the region’s nursing shortage, the University of Rochester Medical Center and School of Nursing announced an innovative program to reimburse tuition costs for nursing education for 33 students per year, with the first cohort expected to enroll in Fall 2023.

The UR Nursing Scholars Program will cover 100 percent of tuition costs for Accelerated Bachelor’s in Nursing (ABSN) students at the University, after passing their NCLEX-RN® licensure exam and in exchange for committing to work at participating UR Medicine facilities for three years after graduation.

The School of Nursing also offers a Prerequisite Scholarship Program to cover tuition costs for prerequisite courses for students applying to the Summer and Fall 2023 cohorts for the 12-Month Accelerated BSN program.

 

CORE Peer Navigator Project has launched

The New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS) and the NYS Office of Mental Health (OMH) have announced that the CORE Peer Navigator Project is now live and accepting phone calls. The CORE Peer Navigator Project is designed to engage and educate eligible individuals about New York State’s recent transition of four Adult Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services (BH HCBS) to Community Oriented Recovery and Empowerment (CORE) Services. These services promote an individual’s recovery and personal empowerment in community settings.

Who Can Call: HARP enrolled, or HARP and HIV-Special Needs Plan (SNP) eligible individuals interested in CORE or BH HCBS services -or- providers supporting HARP eligible or enrolled individuals with mental health and/or addiction related challenges.

What to Expect: A Peer Navigator Line Specialist will answer each call and determine eligibility to participate. If eligible, the individual will be transferred directly to a Peer Navigator in their region.

What is a Peer Navigator: A Peer Navigator is a person with lived experience of mental health and/or addiction related recovery who is an expert in CORE Services. They will explore the caller’s personal recovery goals and interest in voluntary involvement with CORE or BH HCBS services. The Peer Navigator will support their peer through education, referral, and service engagement. Peer Navigators can connect with individuals via text, phone call, Zoom, or in-person.

Direct care workforce resources shared by CMS

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provides resources to support the direct care workforce, who provide essential services and supports to older adults and people with disabilities.

  • Online training: Recruiting, Selecting, and Retaining Direct Service Workers to Provide Self-directed Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) This free training series is for individuals who self-direct, or wish to self-direct, their HCBS; their family members; and others who are authorized to provide support, where appropriate. The series consists of six, self-guided modules, each covering a different aspect of direct service worker recruitment, training, and retention.

Understanding and Improving Healthcare Quality and National Healthcare Policy - Cracking the Code on Healthcare Event to be held June 9
