NYSDOH issues transition guidance for temporary nurse aides

Under the federal Section 1135 waiver, nursing homes are able to hire non-certified staff to serve as Temporary Nurse Aides. CMS later announced that TNAs will be required to become Certified Nurse Aides within 4 months after the 1135 waiver ends.

NYSDOH has developed a training program that nursing homes can deliver to qualifying TNAs during this time. To qualify, TNAs must have a minimum of 30 days or 150 hours of employment in the role. The curriculum requires 24 hours of classroom instruction and 16 hours of lab instruction. 35 hours of on-the-job training will be recognized for service during the pandemic.

Applications for COVID-19 provider relief funding open Sept. 29

HRSA has announced that health care providers can apply for $25.5B in relief funds on September 29. Funding includes $8.5B for providers who serve rural patients, and $17B for providers who can document revenue loss and expenses related to the pandemic.

Willow hosting virtual domestic violence summit

Willow's half-day virtual summit is scheduled for September 21 at 8:30AM - 1PM. This conference will bring together law enforcement, lawyers, social workers, advocates, and survivors for a series of panel discussions to address barriers and gaps in services for survivors of domestic violence in the Rochester community.

Spanish COVID-19 vaccine Q&A webinar scheduled

Ibero American Action League, Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities and Disability Rights NY are offering an interactive Q&A discussion in Spanish to help answer questions about the COVID-19 vaccine. The session will be held via Zoom on September 29 at 3-4:30 PM. Panelists include Elisa DeJesus of Ibero and Dr. Marielena Vélez de Brown of the Monroe County Department of Public Health.

Closed captioning and ASL interpreting will be provided.

Professional development for front desk staff available

Monroe County Medical Society is offering Professional Development for Front Desk Staff on September 30 at 8:30-11:30 AM. Delivered by the Western NY Rural Area Health Education Center, this training will cover issues including professionalism, medical ethics, communication and cultural sensitivities.

The training will be held via Zoom. It costs $75 for MCMS members or $125 for non-members.

Virtual dementia education series starts this month

The Alzheimer's Association Rochester/Finger Lakes Chapter and the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center are offering a monthly webinar series for health care professionals on Alzheimer's Disease. The series will provide health care practitioners up-to-date information on Alzheimer’s Disease and local resources. CEUs are available for physicians and social workers. Topics and dates include:

  • Frontotemporal degeneration - Oct. 14 at 8 AM
  • Diabetes and cognition - Nov. 4 at 8 AM
  • Mental health and dementia - Dec. 10 at 12 PM
  • Dentistry and dementia - Jan. 14 at 12 PM
  • Health equity in Alzheimer's Disease - Feb. 3 at 8 AM
  • Care of older Latinx adults with neurocognitive impairment - Mar. 17 at 8 AM
  • Sexuality, aging and dementia - Apr. 15 at 12 PM

Chamber offers successful supervision training

The Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce is offering its 5-session virtual training on successful supervision. Topics covered in this training include:

  • Supervisors' roles and responsibilities
  • Achieving performance goals
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Delegation and positive accountability

Course sessions will be held 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM on October 26, 28, November 3, 9 and 16. The session costs $695 for Greater Rochester Chamber members, or $895 for non-members.

NYS Clinical Laboratory Association conference scheduled

The 2021 New York State Clinical Laboratory Conference will be held in-person on October 6-7 in Albany.
