Older Adult Housing

Finger Lakes Region

This chart displays the percentage of housing units occupied by older adults that have renters versus owners. Within the Finger Lakes region, the majority of residents aged 60+ own their home versus rent it, with percentages ranging from 75% in Monroe County to 87% in Livingston and Seneca Counties. The housing stock within the region is largely comprised of single-family homes, with more than half built before 1960. Often times, these homes do not include accessibility features such as wide doorways and hallways, or first-floor bathrooms and bedrooms. Additional costs, repairs, and maintenance that come with homeownership can be challenging for older adults with fixed incomes, as can any renovations needed for improved accessibility.
