Food Insecurity by Insurance Type

Finger Lakes and Western New York Region (2021)

The below chart uses Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey data to estimate the percentage of the population that have been concerned about affording nutritious meals in the past year. Notably, one quarter of respondents who were insured by Medicaid reported this concern. This rate among Medicaid recipients is estimated to be nearly five times higher than the rate among those with private insurance. While the proportion of respondents with Medicaid reported food insecurity at twice the rate of uninsured respondents, this difference is not statistically significant with 95% confidence.
