Unnecessary Emergency Department Visit Rate by Race/Ethnicity

New York Finger Lakes Region

The NYU Algorithm provides a methodology to classify ED visits into a several categories based on whether the underlying condition truly requires emergency care and, if so, whether the emergent condition was potentially preventable had timely and effective ambulatory care been received.

The trend chart below show that while the overall increase in the rate of unnecessary ED visits has been gradual and mild, there has been a more dramatic increase for African-American and Latino urban populations, particularly since 2012. The rate for the white population has been fairly stable.
