William Brien, MPA

Director of Practice Transformation

Bill Brien leads Common Ground Health’s practice transformation team, which supports clinicians’ transition toward a patient-centered, medical-home model. Brien and his team of 10 experts provide technical assistance on quality improvement and value-based care strategies to more than 500 clinicians in the Finger Lakes region.

A member of the nonprofit since 2013, Brien previously served as the team coordinator and an advisor for the agency’s Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation initiative, a four-year quality improvement intervention in 65 primary care practices in the Finger Lakes region. He was responsible for mentoring and coaching practice leaders and staff, selecting and implementing quality initiatives and developing the capacity to use data to drive improvement.

Brien’s experience includes nearly 30 years of management in human services and health care. As executive director of Lakeview Mental Health Services, he grew the organization’s annual budget from $600,000 to $5.7 million and expanded its service area from one to six counties. He was recruited to serve as CEO of People Rebuilding and Living in Dignity Inc., an organization with more than 170 employees, to assess and implement corrective actions in financial and regulatory practices. Most recently, Brien served as director of Rochester Regional Health’s behavioral health programs.

Brien earned his bachelor’s degree from the William Penn College and master’s degree from the State University of New York College at Brockport. He studied health policy at D’Youville College and received training in Organizational Leadership, Total Quality Management and Lean Six Sigma.

In his spare time, Bill Brien enjoys golfing and spending time with his six grandchildren.
