More than 600 children and their families sampled healthy meals and fun activities at Frontier Field May 14 as part of the kick off for the Summer Meals, hosted by the Summer Meals Partnership of Rochester. Co-Chaired by Healthi Kids and the Rochester Area Community Foundation, the partnership includes the City of Rochester, Foodlink and the Rochester City School District. It offers kids and teens fresh, healthy and free meals at R-Centers, schools, churches and community organizations in Rochester. Gates, Irondequoit and East Rochester also offer free summer meals. Regional data reveals spike in heroin overdoses
Our 2016 Community Health Assessment shows a dramatic spike in heroin overdose ED visits in the Finger Lakes region, aligning with statewide and national trends. The updated Community Health Assessment recognizes ongoing high rates of obesity, chronic disease, and tobacco use, but it also identifies falls, slips and trips in the 65+ population as an emerging area of concern. Additionally, socio economic status remains the most commonly reported factor associated with health disparity in the region. Read the full report here and view a slide presentation here.
Partner spotlight Satcher awards highlight community collaboration
Over the last seven years, the David Satcher Community Health Improvement Awards from the University of Rochester Medical Center and its Center for Community Health have become an important tool for raising the visibility of community health partnerships.
“There is no better way to highlight the work that researchers, clinicians and educators are doing to reduce disparities than the Satcher awards,” said Wade Norwood, chief strategy officer for FLHSA. “And there is no better tribute to former Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher and his efforts to improve health for our most vulnerable communities.” Read about the Apr. 29 event here.

Practice honored nationally for hypertension control
A High Blood Pressure Collaborative primary care practice was honored nationally for helping its patients achieve hypertension control. Rochester Regional Health’s Unity Family Medicine at St. Bernard’s was named a 2015 Hypertension Control Champion by the national Million Hearts initiative.
The award highlights best practices in hypertension control, including evidenced-based treatment protocols, team-based care, strategic use of electronic health records and patient engagement through care coordinators. Learn more here.
